What should I look for when reviewing a dentist’s qualifications?

Check that the dentist is licensed in California and has completed accredited dental school. For specialties, verify board certification or additional training in areas such as orthodontics or oral surgery. Look for professional affiliations, continuing‑education participation, and any disciplinary history on the state dental board website.

How does my first appointment usually go?

During the initial visit the dentist will review your dental history, take X‑rays if needed, and perform a basic exam. You’ll discuss any concerns, such as pain or cosmetic goals, and receive a clear treatment plan with cost estimates. The team will also explain office policies and scheduling.

How can I compare costs and insurance coverage between practices?

Ask each office which insurance plans they accept and whether they file claims on your behalf. Request a written estimate for any recommended procedures, including fees for labs and anesthesia. Compare these estimates with your policy’s coverage limits, and consider payment options such as in‑office financing or discount programs if needed.
